Subject: [DailyDialogue #282] Being Grounded
"My deeply held conviction of the presence of a superior power, which is revealed in the incomprehensible universe forms my idea of God. Those in devoted occupation with this power find an inner freedom and security."
- Albert Einstein
Commitment begins at home. According to Steven Carter and Julia Sokol, committing "to the place you call home is one of the most crucial first steps" in being able to make commitments outside the house. When we feel as if we are living in a motel and could leave anytime, we separate ourselves from our environment. When we are grounded to our home, creating a living space that reflects ourselves, we feel connected.
Marty and I had a garage sale a year after we moved into our duplex. We were in between renters on the other side of the duplex and decided to use that living room for overflowing nick knacks we hoped buyers would find attractive. One potential buyer literally wondered into the living area from off the street wearing clothing that appeared to be all that he owned.
The next thing I knew, he had disappeared. I had a suspicion he had gone into the basement. Afraid to track him down myself, I asked Marty to do the deed. He found the homeless man in our unfinished basement and after greeting him with, "Partner, the garage sale is not down here", the reply was "Is this place grounded?"
In thinking back to that moment, I realize my answer probably would have been no. Until this month, I have not seen this residence as any more than a temporary dwelling. I stayed disconnected from my surroundings in the neighborhood and complained that this location was not for me. Almost overnight, the presence of a superior power revealed to me the incomprehensible plan that I was to make this my home and locate my office in my neighborhood. Now I have a new sense of an inner freedom and security as I commit to connecting with my surroundings.
Experiment: How committed are you to the place you call home? Take a step to get more grounded in your home. Unpack your boxes, buy a new piece of furniture, put pictures on the wall, redecorate your home. Create a living space that reflects important aspects of you.
Affirmation: The presence of a higher power as my foundation, helps me stay connected and grounded.
