Subject: [DailyDialogue #246] What Men Want

"What women want:
To be loved, to be listened to, to be desired, to be respected, to be needed, to be trusted, and sometimes, just to be held.

What men want:
Tickets for the World Series."

-- Dave Barry Eddy, thanks for blessing me with your gratitude and your appreciation of yesterday. I feel grateful and a little embarrassed that you were so appreciative of me. I resonated with Dr. Parrot who writes, "Being appreciated is a man's primary need." (Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts)

I seem to mostly want appreciation for things that I accomplish. It seems silly to be so wrapped in doing things well. Yet, I seem to have that need. I also want you to be my buddy and do some of the dumb things that I like doing, like going on a motorcycle ride, or sitting for a science lecture, or hanging out in espresso bars.

You are very good at appreciating. You seem to genuinely admire the things I'm doing and that means a lot to me. You also make time to hang out with me and that feels good too.

Experiment: For women: Ccompliment your male partner for a couple of things that he has done pretty well recently. For men: try validating your female partner's upset feelings while refraining from any problem-solving.

Affirmation: We are transcending our gender differences by appreciating them. The Daily Dialogue is published each day of 1998 by e-mail. Copyright 1998, Eddy Brame and Marty Crouch, All rights reserved.
