Subject: [DailyDialogue #204] Speaking Up
"If only I had spoken up...I wouldn't be sorry now."
- Constance (paraphrased) from the movie "Wilde"
Oscar Wilde, who wrote the play "The Importance of Being Earnest", had difficulty practicing his professed belief in his relationship with his wife,
Constance. He was convicted of sodomy with Lord Alfred Douglas. His wife Constance had an idea that Oscar was living a life of pretense but she was afraid to speak up. Later, when Oscar was sentenced to two years of hard labor in prison, she wondered how their life might have been different had she spoken up.
There were many times in my first marriage when I chose not to speak up. Being less than genuine in my relationship, it lacked the intimacy that is required to maintain a lasting bond. When my former husband announced he was leaving, I said to myself, "If only I had spoken up."
Experiment: In what areas are you withholding in your primary relationship? Are you being earnest, sincere, genuine, authentic and honest. Share a secret you have been hiding from you mate.
Affirmation: I am speaking up.
