"Do what gives you life." Jack Manin
A time may come when one of us says, "this isn't working for me, and it hasn't been working for a long time. We've worked on our relationship, sought help, and tried for years. But I think we're on trains bound for different places." If this is your situation, then Jack's statement to his daughter Mary Manin Morrissey may fit for you.
On the other hand, perhaps you haven't yet sought help from a program or a counselor that engages you and your partner in dialogue. (Individual counseling is helpful for many problems, but not for partnerships.) If you haven't sought dialogue training and practice, you haven't gone far enough together to know what your partnership can bring to both. You haven't reached the high country where you can see clearly.
Eddy and I met weekly (by telephone) with Edward Shea, LCSW, in the early months of our relationship. Edward's training and guidance breathed life into our practice of dialogue, and made a huge difference in our marital fulfillment.
Experiment: Participate in a session together with a counselor who provides training and coaching in dialogue techniques.
Affirmation: We are finding fulfillment in our relationship.
