Subject: [DailyDialogue #171] Dreams
"In marriage we need ways to keep the soul in mind. The details of daily life can so take over that we neglect the mysterious genius that holds it all together. … One simple way to glimpse the genius is to tell each other one's dreams. From this purpose it isn't necessary to interpret the dream as a whole, but merely to notice the various situations one's spouse finds herself in night after night. Without any overt analysis at a symbolic or mythic level, we might still come to appreciate the less predictable aspects of our partner's soul life."
-- Thomas Moore, Soul Mates
Sharing our dreams and puzzling about their meaning is not easy for all. While I enjoy listening to dreams and thinking about their meaning, I hesitate to share my dreams with Eddy. Perhaps I fear being known too well.
Imagine a society of mind readers where we had individual choice to be open-minded (with our minds open to reading by others) or close-minded (with our minds unavailable to reading). I wonder how many of my thoughts would I declare to be publicly unavailable?
Experiment: Agree to remember your dreams. Upon awakening, speak about your dream for a couple of minutes; ask your partner to mirror the dream content. When you've finished, and your partner has mirrored the description, say more about what the dream means to you.
Affirmation: We are appreciating the richness of sharing our inner lives.
