Subject: [DailyDialogue #145] Duty

"There is no duty we so much underrate as the duty of being happy."
- Robert Louis Stevenson
It is our duty to create our own happiness. We tend to think of a duty as something someone else has assigned to us. If we make a promise to ourselves to experience inner joy, we will make choices that support that decision.

There is no situation that can force us to give up our joy. When our joy is dependent on circumstances outside ourselves, we tend to blame others for our feelings. Instead, we can be proactive about initiating action that expresses the joy within us.

In relationships, if we feel indebted to our partner, to pay back a favor, we are not likely to be happy. If we demand that our loved ones do what we want, we will not be happy. If we do our duty to ourselves to activate our joy, others will catch the spirit.

Experiment: Do something today that activates your inner joy. Dialogue with your partner about how your action affects them.

Affirmation: I am filled with joy.
