Subject: [DailyDialogue #121] Shoulds and Wants
"Whenever you find that you are on the side of the majority, it is time to reform."
- Mark Twain
My name is Eddy, which means moving contrary to the direction of the main current or tradition. When we live our lives according to the shoulds of our childhood scripts, we often find ourselves feeling angry. If we take the time to examine our shoulds and wants, we can make choices that fit with our values rather than someone else's.
I have been involved in a job search for additional employment that supports my current part time work. I find myself feeling afraid that the part of me that in non-traditional will not be accepted by those who are interviewing me. I entertain thoughts of not mentioning things that might be controversial to a potential employer.
I find that when I reveal the truth of who I am and what I want, people tend to respect me for taking a stand. Then I know that they like me for who I am rather than who I think I should be.
Experiment: Dialogue with your partner about the parental messages you received regarding what you should do. Share how you have diverted from the mainstream and have done what you really wanted to do.
Affirmation: I know what I want and I have the courage to state it.
