Subject: [DailyDialogue #119] The Inner Dialogue

"The second law of Tango-dynamics: Anything that can be done to the left can also be done to the right." - Dr. Clay Nelson, dance instructor.

Learning a new dance is one of the best ways to study criticism. In my study, I find that the majority of the criticism is that which I give myself. At times it's relentless: "You can't even remember the molinate from last week. How do you expect to ever learn the whole dance?"

I think that the practice of dialogue moderates this self-criticism over time. In the dialogue my partner becomes a training partner for me because she practices the role of listener. As such, she gives up roles of critic, helper and teacher and seeks only to understand, empathize and validate. I think that as I hear this from my partner repeatedly over the months and years, I will begin to incorporate the same non-judging and understanding into my self-talk.

Experiment: Dialogue with your partner about your self-criticism, your history of self-criticism and how it is changing.

Affirmation: I am letting go of self-criticism. The Daily Dialogue is published each day of 1998 by e-mail. Copyright 1998, Eddy Brame and Marty Crouch, All rights reserved.
