Subject: [DailyDialogue #109] Groups and Dialogue
"Groups go through the following predictable phases: forming, tasking, psuedo-community, chaos, and true-community. There may be other ways of getting to true community." -- Jim Hussey Last night, our group of three couples shared answers to yesterday's dialogue questions, in an atmosphere of relaxed conversation. This sharing added depth to our monthly dinner gathering. One woman observed: "It has taken us several months to get to the point where we can sit around after dinner and share at this level. When the new couple joins us, it will change..."
Group dialogue sometimes breaks down under stress. Unfortunately the structure of sending, receiving, mirroring, and acknowledgement that we often practice in partner dialogue isn't commonly used in groups. Structuring practices, such as a talking stick, or taking turns answering questions, helps us to deepen our group experience.
Experiment: Dialogue about some structuring techniques that you might use to aid your groups in remaining in dialogue.
Affirmation: We contribute to our community groups as we practice dialogue principles. The Daily Dialogue is published each day of 1998 by e-mail.
