From The Daily Dialogue
Broadcast of 4/11/98
Subject: [DailyDialogue #101] Umbilical Cord
"People have seen in 'Les Parents Terribles" all manner of scabrous, shocking things. They are quite possibly there, but I never intended them and I never saw them. I was stupefied at realizing how people must suppress their neuroses -- for how else could they imagine the things they do about such a simple situation involving a mother joined to her son by the umbilical cord?" Jean Cocteau, Playwrite
Mother-Son and Father-Daughter relationships are important, no doubt. Most of us get to experience one, if not both of these. It seems easy for these relationships to be too hot, wherein I am so closely attuned to the emotions of my parent that they seem to over-shadow my own, where the fear of disturbing her/his emotions impairs my agency.
Experiment: Practice dialogue with your parent or child today.
Affirmation: Our ongoing dialogue with our parents and children increases our healthy differentiation.
