"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference."- The Serenity Prayer
We tend to experience the most frustration when we try to change something over which we have no control. We have no control over other people's thoughts, feelings and actions. We may be able to influence others. However, if we are attached to someone else changing in order for us to be happy, we are in big trouble. As we adopt this point of view, we have more time and energy to focus on changing our own thoughts, feelings and actions.
An adaptation of the Serenity Prayer goes something like... Goddess, grant me the serenity to accept the people I can not change, the courage to change the person I can and the wisdom to know it's me. One of the most powerful things we can do is to change our thoughts. As we state an affirmation of the desired outcome we want as if it is already a reality, we are on the way to creating new results.
The affirmation starts with "I am..." indicating that it is our thoughts, feelings and behavior we are referring to.
Finally, we can develop a plan of action in which we make an agreement to take steps in the direction of our desired outcome. Simply being willing to change and be open to guidance is a big step.
Experiment: Dialogue about an area of your life you have been wanting to change or control that involves other people. Write an affirmation stating the thought or feeling you would like to have about the situation. Tell your partner what action step you are going to take in the direction of making your dream a reality.
Affirmation: I am changing my thoughts, feelings and actions to be in alignment with my dreams.
