Subject: [DailyDialogue #43] Stretching

"Sometimes we need to hurt a bit before we will feel better." Barbara Jensen Ferguson, Yoga Instructor

Physically, yoga seems to consist of carefully designed movements and poses, a structure for exercising the body. It consists of periods of strentching and tensing followed by periods of resting. Practicing yoga usually stimulates my muscles and connective tissue into moderate pain. I suppose this helps keep my mind from wondering, which gives some consolation. My favorite part of the yoga session is final relaxation, the reward for all that tensing and stretching. I always feel better after a yoga session.

Likewise the practice of dialogue involves a structure for exercising the muscles and connective tissue of our relationship. The dialogue sender may reveal painful thoughts and feelings and may test the receiver's ability to maintain an attentive pose of equanminity and unconditional acceptance. In the dialogue, the practice of acknowledgement and empathy is akin to the "final relaxation" of yoga. It is therein that peace and relaxation flood the senses.

Experiment: Visualize your next dialogue as a toning and strengthening exercise that always leaves you feeling better afterward.

Affirmation: We stretch and tone the connective tissues of our relationship through our practice of dialogue. The Daily Dialogue is published each day of 1998 by e-mail.
