Subject: [DailyDialogue #42] Happiness
"Real happiness is not dependent on external things. The pond is fed from within. The kind of happiness that stays with you is the happiness that springs from inward thoughts and emotions. You must cultivate your mind if you wish to achieve enduring happiness. You must furnish you mind with interesting thoughts and ideas."
- Lillian Eichler Watson paraphrasing William Lyons Phelps
Have you been expecting your relationship or your career to make you happy? Joy is an inside job. This idea is very empowering because we can change our thoughts even in situations when we cannot change the events of our lives.
What do you think is most important to you? What do you spend the most time thinking about? What thoughts might you choose about your current situation that would result in a sense of happiness?
When we look for the good we find the good. When we expect miracles, we experience miracles. When we believe in angels we see angels.
Experiment: Take turns saying "I am grateful... (fill in the blank with something about which you have happy thoughts). Share one gratitude and then switch and let you partner share. Continue until one is ready to stop.
Affirmation: I give thanks for the good that is present in my life right now.
