Subject: [DailyDialogue #19] Struggle
"Most marriages stall in the power struggle. The power struggle is supposed to happen, for it is a necessary prelude to recovering the potential hinted at in the romantic stage." - Harville Hendrix & Helen Hunt
Most couples begin to struggle as the romance of their new relationship is gradually replaced with familiarity and commitment.Power usually isn't the object of conscious desire. We usually want our partner to change, to change irritating little habits or differences that are difficult for us to accept.
Our differences, those same differences that we once found so attractive fuel our struggles. These differences point to capacities in ourselves that are calling out for development.
Experiment: Make a hypothesis about the core struggle in your partnership. Dialog with your partner about your hypothesis without attempting to convince each other.
Affirmation: My partner is not me, or even that much like me. I don't want her to be more like me, because her differences are fascinating.
