Subject: [DailyDialogue #338] Hero Disappointment
Each man is a hero and an oracle to somebody. - Ralph Waldo Emerson
I've always had heroes, people that I admire and emulate. Sometimes I've cast my partner in the hero role and looked for her to be my guide, myprincess, my avatar.
Sooner or later, heroes make a misstep, or take a fall. This is as it should be; for it reminds me that none are infallible. It reminds me not to be too demanding and perfectionist with myself.
Unfortunately, we are often tempted to punish the hero or heroine who has made a mistake. Perhaps this is ego's way of seeking advantage, or of avoiding more painful feelings of disappointment and loss.
Experiment: Dialogue with your partner about a time that he or she disappointed you. If possible, relate this to a disappointment that you experienced with a caregiver in your childhood.
Affirmation: We are all heroic in our own ways. We all make mistakes. Forgiveness is an act of heroism.
