Subject: [DailyDialogue #322] Self-Renewal
"Every soul is a melody which needs renewing." - Stéphane Mallarmé
Each one of us is arranged to sound like a harmonic composition. Sometimes our sequence of tones comes off as more dissonant than melodic. We sound harsh and disagreeable. When we understand the structure of a harmonious soul, we are more likely to live a pleasing harmony.
Kim Cameron taught a course called Management Processes at the University of Wisconsin. In the course she delineated the characteristics of self-renewing individuals. A self-renewing individual:
1. is self-educating.
2. has the courage to fail.
3. continues to learn about oneself.
4. cares about things outside oneself.
5. makes and keeps promises to oneself.
I recently had a dispute with my bank about a deposit. I learned that when a customer makes an inquiry about a deposit, the bank has 45 days to prove they are right. I believed that I had made a deposit for $100 more than the bank said I did. I had the courage to pursue the return of my money.
In the process I learned a lot about myself. After 72 days, I stopped being concerned that the bank told me they were too busy to handle my inquiry. They said they would close the case and give me credit after 45 days if they failed to come up with proof that I had made an error. I promised myself to continue until they kept their agreement. In the meantime, I felt angry and spoke to the bank personnel in a tone of voice that did not renew the melody of my soul.
Experiment: Dialogue with your partner about how well you are doing at renewing your soul.
Affirmation: I am singing a song of pleasing harmonies that renews my soul.
