Subject: [DailyDialogue #256] Dreams of Peace

"I recently discovered that I have been mistaken. Throughout my life and my career, I worked primarily on ideas, plans and programs. Now I think it is not ideas that are most important, but dreams. The dreams come first. Then progress on the dreams is ideas. The idea is a technique or a progress that comes out of the dream."
- Dr. Robert Muller, Chancellor, University for Peace, Costa Rica

Dr. Muller grew up in France near the border with Germany. As a child he noticed that clouds, birds and breezes paid no attention to the border between the countries. He dreamed of a peaceful world without borders and border-conflicts. As a young man, Muller was imprisoned by Nazis during the German occupation. He says, "During the war, I almost lost all faith that this world is manageable. If two civilized Western countries do this to each other, what hope do we have?"

Following the war, Dr. Muller had a long career with the United Nations and eventually retired as the Assistant Secretary General. He contributed many ideas for progress toward peace. Now he is a leader at the University for Peace, dedicated to the pursuit of peaceful and earth-friendly relations among nations.
